Now that protective masks and eye shields are a must in many public places, and epidemiologists are strongly advocating face shields for non-medical users, people have come up with ways to upgrade the mandatory personal protective equipment (PPE) into multifunctional use, while others have revamped the humble protective gear into sophisticated fashionable wear. Some are already available in the market, while others are currently a working demo. Here are a few that have made the limelight.
Keeping the Skin in Check
The Singapore-based company, Lush Aesthetics, has come up with a lightweight device that can be worn on top of the surgical or reusable face mask. Complete with LED light treatment, the LED Beauty Light Shield promises to protect the wearer from respiratory droplets while doubling up as skin protection.

Touch That Face No More
While donning an ergonomic and minimalist design, some say wearing it is as easy as wearing a pair of glasses. In fact, it can also be worn with a pair of specs. Designed by Henry Kwak, Blocc has two temple-stems and a nose-bridge which allows it to rest comfortably against the wearer’s nose and ears. With the visor suspended roughly an inch away from the face, it serves as a stylish barrier between the wearer’s hands and face. Image credit: Blocc
Sunglasses With a New Look
New York’s creative talent, Joe Doucet, has made an effort to design a face shield with integrated sunglasses lenses. The award-winning designer favors face shields that feel less awkward and uncomfortable when serving a practical purpose at the same time. Seeking an answer to his query, “how do we encourage mass adoption of an unwanted necessity?” he created a sleek and stylish face shield that the public might actually stick to.
