The book contains real-life scenarios faced by sales persons and details the sales process, as well as the personalities of patients, customers and owners using a comprehensive approach in professional selling skills. In this feature, Mushtaq shares his inspiration and experiences, including the preparation and challenges it took to make the book a resounding success.

As a columnist, author, presenter, business administrator, life coach and a kind father, Mushtaq has become a sought-after name in the optical industry in the Gulf region. He ascended the career ladder and is currently a senior manager. He has worked for Johnson and Johnson Vision Care and contributed immensely to the growth of contact lenses in the market. From his humble beginnings, having faced numerous challenges, Mushtaq never lets his circumstances hold him back. But it was his passion to rise to the top of the corporate ladder that ultimately sets him on the path to success.

“As creative persons, we are always curious to know more and do more. At the same time, we look for triggers to execute our hidden skills. As a co-traveler in the journey of optics, my regular chats with Mr. Ali Hassan Banddor were the catalyst who triggered me to share my experience of my journey. Thus, I started to write in Eyezone International Magazine, which by itself is a pioneering effort in Middle East, and still continues to serve the optical community with zeal and perseverance,” he said.

Speaking to Eyezone International, Mushtaq said that the book is based on his daily interactions with doctors, sales persons and owners while acknowledging their requests and serving their needs so that they can in turn help the patients to see better and look better.

“The book contains no hard and fast rules. Whatever I have written and said, it is my opinion based on my observations in the market. It has been shared in good faith to make our calling better and improve our business etiquette so that we can serve our customers and patients exceptionally well,” he explained.

Mushtaq is encouraging everyone to challenge his opinion and come out with their own best thoughts in the best interest of the business at large. For him, the ultimate goal remains the same for both sides, that is to serve customers and patients exceptionally well.

Moreover, Mushtaq also shared the book’s publishing process, which is self-published, print-on-demand and currently available on Amazon for a reasonable price. He is planning to collaborate with Eyezone International in the future to distribute the book in the GCC and other regions.

The book is an anthology of the various articles he had written over a decade in the magazine. The topics were chosen to stay in sync with his experiences during the time of recession, Covid-19, war, and other events which had caused vision anomalies such as incidences of myopia in children, which he said is expected to affect 50% of the world’s population by 2030. He added that due to this fact, the fundamentals in sales and business processes need to match this rising need to help patients see better.

“The book is full of anecdotes, humor, real life problems and customized solutions. I have full faith it will be enormously beneficial to our trade,” he added.

Mushtaq said his source of inspiration has been the people whom he has been associated with, as well as the experiences and stories they share. He was referring to the people who have left their home country to work in the Gulf.

“They pushed their devastated lives behind, albeit their war-torn sufferings and poverty-stricken households and still would put up a smile on their faces to meet their routine customers bravely,” he said.

“While I have published this book now, in retrospect, our Gulf countries have come a long way since the boom started. The blood and sweat of these wonderful expatriates must have added enormous strength to the concrete pillars we see around. This is an absolute inspiration for me. I dedicate this book to all of them,” he concluded.

Mushtaq said that he is working on another book about upskilling the youth, especially the teenagers, to give them hope, as well as train them well to face the world after college.

Depp Battles in Court with Vintage Eyewear

Armi Menorca

Blog

Celebrity

Entertainment

Eyeglasses

Eyewear

Fashion

News

Trivia

TV Spot

Amber Heard

court battle

eyeglasses

Johnny Depp

spectacles

vintage eyewear

Truffles the Kitty, a tuxedo cat, is a feline ambassador for children’s vision care. The Madrigal family is endowed with superhuman powers, except for Mirabel, the optimistic, glass-wearing heroine of the 2021 animated Disney film. She may not be the “perfect” granddaughter in the eyes of her abuela, the town’s founding matriarch, but her bespectacled character makes her the first unconventional, glass-wearing protagonist of Disney, thanks to a 12-year-old Disney fan who wrote the animation giant back in 2019 to feature a character that wears spectacles.

SPOILER ALERT: This write-up might contain relevant scenes from the movie.

It is not often that we see an eyeglass-wearing Disney lead character, although there are a couple of supporting characters that do, namely Doc (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs), Sadness (Inside Out), Merlin the Wizard (The Sword in the Stone), Milo Thatch (Atlantis), Mr. Smee (Peter Pan), Geppetto (Pinocchio), John Darling (Peter Pan) and Scoorge McDuck (Ducktales), among others. In the story, Mirabel is portrayed as the only Madrigal who has no magical gift which made her the underdog and the outcast within the magical family, and resulted into her wanting to fit in. It is a known fact that glass-wearers to this age still carry the weight of stereotypes and bullying, especially among the younger generation. Mirabel’s yearning to belong is expressed as an “unspoken, invisible pain” in the moving ballad, Waiting on a Miracle, depicting how unmet unrealistic societal expectations can drag people down and even put pressure on the other members of the family, as shown driving Mirabel’s sister, Luisa, to the brink of mental breakdown in Surface Pressure.

Mirabel’s glasses may also signify an analogy to how she alone could clearly see the invisible cracks in their magical home, the casita, which if not addressed could cause it to crumble to the ground, signaling its ultimate demise and, symbolically, the apparent downfall of the family. After all, Mirabel’s name was derived from the Spanish word, “mira,” which means sight, illustrating her gift of hindsight on the impending crisis.

Overall, at the heart of Encanto is magical realism depicting an abstract villain in the form of intergenerational trauma, a nod to Gabriel García Márquez’s yellow butterflies and classic retelling of Colombia’s dark past, and not to mention, showcasing the country’s rich biodiversity through Antonio’s gift. On another note, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical genius struck gold with the movie’s score since his stint as playwright and lyricist of the Broadway hit musical, Hamilton.

Cat Wears Eyeglasses to Encourage Children to Wear Them

Armi Menorca

Blog

Awareness

Celebrity

Children's health

Children's Vision

Digital

Entertainment

Eyeglasses

Eyewear

Fashion

Trivia

cat lover

cat spectacles

cat wearing eyeglasses

children eye health

children eyeglasses

children vision

color blind

color blindness

eye health

eyecare

eyeglasses

eyewear

optometry

Truffles the Kitty

vision care

Truffles the Kitty, a tuxedo cat, is a feline ambassador for children’s vision care. In the past few months, we found refuge from the web to link us back together, conducting a series of so-called “micro-webinars” not only to upscale our skills and qualifications, but for us to also keep up with social connectivity, interacting even in the digital context. Many of those who have worked from home found ease in touching base with co-workers and employers through famous teleconferencing platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet and Go-To-Meeting to stream both evergreen and live meetings and webinars.

It started with a hopeful note, “Optical Industry: Way Forward Post-Covid19,” a webinar aired by long-time business administrator in the GCC, Mushtaq Ahmed. The presentation was adopted into a microlearning virtual environment to push aside the constraints of social distancing at the peak of the Covid19 crisis back in May 2020. An engaging discussion on the impact of the pandemic on consumer behavior and the retail industry’s frontliners, it also delved into the pros and cons of online businesses. At the very least, it kickstarted a series of soft skill-based talks, fashioned in conversational style and molded for eye care professionals in the region.

“Stop Selling, Start Building” brewed the perfect concoction for regaining strength after the crisis, and was followed by an interactive motivational discussion on consumer psychology through “The Pre-Sales Process: Knowing Your Customers like the Back of Your Hands”, a predecessor to the webinars on customer support, titled “Identifying Customer Needs through Relationship Building”, and knowing customers better in “Mapping Questioning Skills with Human Personality”. Attendees were hooked with the webinars’ spontaneity that somewhat afforded them access into the human psyche. This was evident in the audience’s favorable overall feedback and requests for more eye-opening serialized meetings, so to speak. With about a month’s preparation, social media engagement somehow piqued the readers’ interest through polling and direct invites.

It’s interesting to mention the challenges faced by speakers, as well, though it may seem technical in nature, for example, when the screen-sharing suddenly malfunctions or when an attendee accidentally opens the video camera. And what about those that accidentally jot down scribbles on the screen while the presenter is screen-sharing their slides, or even those moments when the speaker attempts to make “eye contact” with attendees but is actually eye-balling the camera in real life. At the end of the day, we realize that we are, after all, humans behind the machine, groping for another human at the end of the line. It briefly poses a safer space for familiarity at the time of disconnect, or creating snippets of “meaningful connection”, which Dr. Wayne Baker of Psychology Today posits in his article “How to Connect Meaningfully in a Virtual Meeting”: “it’s an interaction in which we feel accepted, understood, and supported. We feel heard and cared for. We have a sense of belonging”.

The series also paved the way for experimentation on teleconferencing models. Enabling the polling features gave us glimpses of the participants’ perspectives, even on a surface level, enabling speakers to gain a bird’s eye view of their predispositions and ideals – sort of immediate feedback. Just like in actual meeting spaces, say, when we fervently object to a lousy project proposal on the spot. In a broader sense, this two-way communication mirrors our in-person discourses in some way.

In between these topics were industry-specific ones, such as “Insights on Low Vision Practice” by Dr. Ithar Beshtawi, a low vision expert and prominent optometrist in the region who broadcasted live from Palestine to share fresh information that placed low vision rehabilitation and assessment topics on the spotlight. There is a balance in the structure of each webinar in order to cover every aspect of the practice. Be it about theory or praxis, each presentation generously offers a piece of the pie. And talk about covering almost anything tangible, a webinar for optometry students, titled “Career Paths for Graduating Optometry Students”, served as a mind drill for climbing the career ladder. Covering an hour of thought-provoking discussion, Dr. Gilbert Nacouzi, a data scientist and optometrist, eased the weight off of undergraduates’ anxieties, advising them to choose a career that is “purpose-driven” instead of merely “goal-oriented”.

As we head back to our normal lives, we can reflect and look back to the web that stitched us back together. Pandemic or no pandemic, the webinars and online meetings may have taught us the value of real-life connections, in one way or another, while we learn.

“Hope in Sight” for Better Eye Care

Armi Menorca

Awareness

Charity

Children's health

Children's Vision

Eye Health Matters

Eyecare

Health

Non-profit

Wellness

#hopeinsight

age-related macular degeneration

AMD

blindness

diabetic retinopathy

eye health

glaucoma

Hope in Sight

IAPB

myopia

trachomatous trichiasis

vision health

vision impairment

world sight day

World Sight Day 2020

WSD20

Insta-worthy Eyewear Images and Where to Find Them

Armi Menorca

Blog

Business

Digital

Eyeglasses

Eyewear

Fashion

Optical Shop

Technology

content creator

digital download

eyeglasses

eyewear

glasses

images

Instagram

music

open-source

Pexels

photography

photos

Pixabay

royaltee-free

social media

social media management

spectacles

stock photos

sunglasses

Unsplash

vector

vector graphics

videos

Websites where you can freely download creative and beautiful images and pictures of eyeglasses, sunglasses and any kind of eyewear.

As of today, no other social media network has lived up to Instagram’s reign as the web’s big boss of image content. But even though we often speak of humans’ collective experience in timelines and artifacts, seldom do we recount our most treasured backstories through a geographical perspective. In this topographical retelling of the origin of eyewear, we will journey across vast oceans and territories to trail down the birth – and migration – of eyeglasses.

Offshore Oriental Soil

A “reading stone” used by Italian monks in the 13th century. Credit: zeiss.com.

One may prove that the eyeglasses are a pair of certified global-trotters. Although, before we take this point offshore, we must not overlook the Chinese judges from the 12th-century who said to have worn a type of “sunglasses” made from smoky quartz crystals. These glasses were held in front of their faces for interrogation purposes, that is, to hide their expressions from the witnesses during court proceedings.

An intriguing piece of information had also pointed to Marco Polo’s supposed accounts of elderly Chinese wearing eyeglasses. All of these were discredited by prominent scholars who study his notebooks. Some sources claim, however, that the Zhongtong Town, Yujiang Yingtan, which is well known as the “hometown of glasses”, was home to glasses workshops and commercial organizations as early as the Qing Dynasty, Jiaqing Period.

Glasses Meet Globe

Many sources speculate that Italy, in the late 13th century, signaled the humble journey of the spectacles. According to a manuscript from 1305 AD, a sermon from a Dominican friar from Pisa, named Giordano da Rivalto, appeared saying: “It is not yet 20 years since there was discovered the art of making spectacles.”

Indeed, taking a couple of steps back to the 1300 AD, a group of artisans (cristalleri or glassmakers) from Murano, a small island to the north of Venice, marched an extra mile to pioneer the manufacture of glass. At this point in time, the whole world looked up to Italy as the market leader in the production of white glass used as visual aids. In 1301, the artisans were finally allowed to create “vitreos to oculis ad legendum“ (glass lenses for reading) under the sanction of the Giustizieri Vecchi, the superintendents of Venetian Arts.

And, voila! The first eyeglasses sprang up to existence. The materials of this pair of rivet glasses were made of round biconvex lenses and each was held in a wooden ring with a shaft and connected with a rivet. The pair was used by holding it in front of the eyes.

Eyewear Here, There and Everywhere

A fresco by Tomaso de Modena (1352) with the Church of St. Nicholas, Treviso, Italy. (Image source: National Geographic)

Treading this route, in the sixteenth century, the trade of glasses spread across Europe. From Italy, this new invention was introduced to other countries, namely Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, Spain, France, and England.

As a result of these intersections, spectacle manufacturing businesses emerged in many parts of the globe. It is worth noting that some of the first spectacle frames were even made from leather and wood.

Over time, the rivet glasses leapt over countries and cultures, unstoppable in its track. One of the oldest artifacts of the rivet glasses was discovered in Wienhausen Abbey in the northern part of Germany. In another corner of the world, considered a groundbreaking creation during this period were the concave lenses crafted for the nearsighted, Pope Leo X.

Meanwhile, Spanish eyeglass manufacturers innovated with their product and attached silk ribbons to the lenses. These ribbons were then looped on the wearer’s ears. It is only when the Spanish and Italian missionaries brought the glasses to China that the practice of looping ribbons to the ears was dropped by the Chinese. Instead, little weights were tied to the ribbons to keep them in place.

Similarly, as the years passed by, the shaft of the rivet glasses was replaced with an arch, and the wooden frames with lead, marking the inception of glasses with temples. It was the dawning of the 18th century coinciding with the arrival of the close relative to the pair of glasses that stares back at us as we look in the mirror today.

Journey to Newfound Lands

Engraved nose spectacles, made of mother-of-pearl and copper, which emerged in Europe in the 17th century. Credit: galleriasafilo.com

Treading on the streets of London, the first models of the “ear glasses” or “temple glasses” emerged. Interestingly, these descendants of the rivet glasses featured a nose bridge and temples for holding the glasses in place by the ear. A metal ring was often attached to the end of the temples for comfort. In 1728, the ear glasses appeared in a promotional brochure from the English optician Scarlett.

Fast forward between 1727 and 1730, one could find a reason to celebrate because, all hail to the British optician, Edward Scarlett, he was the first guy to perfect the “temple glasses“, which were described as “equipped with rigid side-arms pressing on the temples ending in large loops”.

Then, circuiting the opposite path, the United States of America, manufacturers, and consumers alike were passionate about improving the glasses. One such gem was the creation of the bifocal lenses back in 1784, widely believed to be devised by none other than Benjamin Franklin.

Regardless of the veracity of this claim, however, the bifocal lenses are still being labeled as the “Franklin glasses” to date and it can be considered the precursor to the varifocal lenses that exist in our era.

A Passage to the Future

The eyeglasses of our modern world are a bonafide testament to the industry’s endurance as it stood the tests not merely of time, but also of its many crossroads heading towards progress. From the glassmakers of Italy to the manufacturers of the USA, the industry will continue to etch cartography of innovative vision aids worldwide. But we are reminiscing, as we do now, the stopovers of its distant past once in a while.

Kids Eyewear Trends for Back-To-School

Armi Menorca

Children's Vision

Eyeglasses

Eyewear

Fashion

Optician

Wellness

children eye health

children vision

children's vision

eyecare

eyeglasses

eyewear

eyewear fashion

kids eyewear

kids fashion

optician

spectacles

vision care

Choosing the right eyeglasses for kids is not all fun and games.
