The Glassmakers of Venice
In the early 1200s in Venice, early craftsmen knew that shaping rock crystals into convex shapes could form “lapides ad legendum”, also called “oglarii di vitro”, or the so-called “stones for reading”. NEW YORK CITY – Dr. Kovin Naidoo, chief executive officer of the Brien Holden Vision Institute (Australia), will receive the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the State University of New York (SUNY) College of Optometry for making lasting contributions to eye and vision care. He will join the College’s graduating class on Thursday, May 24, at the Roosevelt Hotel in midtown Manhattan during the 2018 commencement ceremony. 
Glaucoma causes fluid pressure to build up inside the eye (intraocular pressure), damaging the optic nerve. It is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide, and currently affects 57.5 million people, and is expected to increase to 65.5 million by 2020.
