The Optical Sales & Technical Service (OSTS) program is a three-level continuing education pathway for optical assistants and dispensers. Level 1 lays the foundation — covering the essentials of the retail journey, vision basics, prescription reading, and lens materials. It’s designed to build confident, patient-centred service skills alongside the core technical knowledge every optical professional needs.

This level includes four sessions plus a 10-question review, and awards your OSTS Level 1 Certificate on completion.

Course Content

Level 1
Welcome to the foundational level of the OSTS program. Here, we establish the core standards for professional optical service. You will learn to bridge the gap between technical product knowledge and effective patient communication, ensuring that every interaction not only meets the client's needs but also builds long-term trust in your practice. This level covers four sessions — The Retail Journey, Vision Basics, Decoding the Prescription, and Lens Materials — followed by a 10-question review.
